Putting sustainability first

We are one of the most environmentally-friendly hostels in the UK. In fact, The Barrel Store was the first Passivhaus hostel in the UK and a finalist in the 2018 Passivhaus Awards - a building standard for ultra-low energy buildings.

According to the Passivhaus Trust, buildings are accountable for 35% of total global energy consumption. Passivhaus is a way for new and existing buildings to provide a high level of occupant comfort while using very little energy for heating and cooling.
