We care about the environment

• We are one of the most environmentally friendly hostels in the UK. We were designed as an ultra-low energy building.

• The Barrel Store was built to rigorous Passivhaus standards - Passivhaus is a voluntary standard for energy efficiency in buildings, reducing our ecological footprint. Passivhaus means ultra-low energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling. You can read all the science behind our building here.

• The Barrel Store was the first Passivhaus hostel in the UK and a finalist in the 2018 Passivhaus Awards.

• We use renewable electricity throughout.

We care about our community

The Barrel Store is run by a charity.

For every guest that stays with us we make a donation to our partner charity New Brewery Arts. This support enables New Brewery Arts celebrate craft and creativity in all our lives and to work with our community to ensure those who would greatly benefit from the joy and fulfilment of making can explore their creativity.

In 2020 we worked with local homeless relief teams to house those most in need. And received regional recognition for our work with the homeless community.
